Hop Picking In Kent (1929)

Great Empire News Bulletin shows workers busily stripping vines in the Kentish hop gardens. Many of the pickers are children, who beam cheekily at the camera before settling down for a hearty picnic. From the comments:

Hop picking was actually considered a treat for London's inner city inhabitants. Every summer, families from the cramped, dirty, and squalid East End would tramp to London's environs to pick hops and enjoy the sunshine and space.
